July 2019

Get your vacations in and your picnics planned because here we are once again staring back to school directly in the face. Every retailer in the area has taken down the red, white and blue and have traded it in for school bus yellow. Pens, pencils, paper and backpacks will be throughout every flyer and commercial from now until mid August, which is the time this Newsletter is for. So, this edition is dedicated to that season that all kids either love or love to hate. It’s back to school time in Tennessee!

For our newsletter this month we will focus exclusively on this topic and give you some valuable info on the whens and wheres of the new school season and GSMAR’s classes too.

We have made a staff change here at the office. We want to say goodbye to Kayla, our MLS and Affiliate program staff member; and say hello to John Houston, who has taken over that spot. Kayla has moved over to Heritage Title, and we wish her the best of luck in her new adventure. Here are some words from John to let you know who he is. We encourage you to stop by the office and meet him as well.

“Hello, My Name is John Houston. I’m the new MLS Admin for GSMAR. I am originally from Florida but have lived in East Tennessee for most of my life. I’ve been married to my wife Stephany for 10 years. We have one son named Gabe. We also have an absolutely beautiful 2 year old granddaughter named Violet. When I’m not spending time with Violet or working in our bakery (Wildflour Bakehouse), you can find me at one of my fishing holes. I have an extensive IT and customer service background. I believe that this background makes me uniquely qualified for this new role. I look forward to working with our Board, Staff and area REALTORS. If I can be of service, please don’t hesitate to reach out.”

Thanks John, we are glad to have you here at GSMAR.

Another new thing to announce - the GSMAR office has a new roof. The past two weeks the roofers have been hard at work pulling up the old shingles and laying down a new metal roof. Stop by the office and check out our new hat.

We also have two new Affiliate Members. Please welcome:

Darren Cooper from

Front Porch Media

And

Stephanie Howard from

Home Inspection Headquarters

You can see them both in our affiliates section

Scholarship Committee

Below is a letter from the Scholarship Committee

“The committee has completed this year’s processes of reviewing and selecting the winners of the GSMAR - J. Pritchard Barnes Scholarship and Kindergarten Grant programs. Thank you to all of you that participated in this year's process. It was an honor to chair this committee. In the last two years we have brought this program to the forefront. With all your help we are showing that REALTORS® really do care.

I would also want to thank Debra Cline of Sevier County and Melanie Eslinger of Cocke County for assisting us in getting the Scholarship and Grant applications and information out about our programs.

GSMAR - J Pritchard Barnes Scholarship Program

We received and reviewed over 60 scholarship applications and essays this year. After reading the essays the committee has recommended seven scholarship winners, one for each High School in Sevier & Cocke Counties. The recommendations have been approved by the board, and checks have been sent out to the schools that the winners will be attending. The winners will be attending our August 1st GSMAR Breakfast meeting at 8:30a.m., at which time we will recognize them and provide them a certificate. One of the winners, Logan Emory has been asked to present and read his essay at our meeting.

2019 Winners

Levi Matthews - Sevier County High School

Mackenzie Lauren Suder - Cocke County High School

Morgan McClure - Pigeon Forge High School

Sharon Baylee Farr - Northview High School

Logan Emory - Gatlinburg - Pittman High School

William Robby Heck III - Seymour Senior High School

Mhala Owen - Cosby High School

GSMAR J. Pritchard Barnes Kindergarten Grant Program

We received 11 applications for the Kindergarten Grants for the 2019 - 2020 school year. We recommended to the board that we award all 11 applicants the grant monies this year. The winners will be invited to the August 1st GSMAR breakfast meeting and be recognized and provided the kindergarten grant checks. Winners will be formally announced

after the Board of Directors Meeting July 18.

In an effort to have more participation next year It was suggested that we consider changing the timing of this program to better accommodate the teachers. It was also suggested that we consider expanding the offer to other grade level teachers for the next year. Next year the GSMAR Scholarship committee will review and recommend several ideas and recommendations to improve the J. Pritchard Barnes Scholarship program. Provided we have the funding, this program should continue moving forward as it helps our young ones in the community and provides recognition to the Great Smoky Mountains Association of REALTORS® and says that we care about education in our community.”

A Big Thank You to Scott Cline, the committee chair, for his tireless work on the scholarship program and to his committee members also. While we move forward, our goal is to make this a truly inspiring program that will lift up our community and give them the gift of education.

Secretary for the Association is a big job. There are more than just notes, there are responsibilities too. Some of those responsibilities are taking notes for other functions like the Broker Breakfast & the Membership Breakfast. Then we have Special Call Meetings and I am required at those also. Along with note taking it is a position of voice. I can put in ideas or suggestions and also vote on items brought before the BOD. I also feel that I represent the BOD at functions, so feel more of an obligation to go to functions to show my support. I am thankful that it is a year position to get my feet wet and see what our Association is about. I am thankful to be serving alongside Chris Gonzalez that I think got our Association turned around and he still carries so much knowledge. I am also thankful for learning under Kathryn Lovell , our president. She has good ideas and lots of knowledge from being around the association and committees for such a long time. Thanks to all of the membership that elected me, and I hope that I am representing them in the way they expected me to also.
